Acquirement of Orbicom, MultiChoice's crucial Signal Distributor, given approval by ICASA clears way for Canal+

In a significant move for the South African media and telecommunications industry, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has approved the transfer of control over Orbicom Proprietary Limited's electronic communications and radio frequency spectrum licences to Groupe Canal SAS.

Orbicom, a key player in South Africa's broadcasting landscape, has served as MultiChoice's primary signal distributor, managing the transmission of satellite television services across the country. With this approval, MultiChoice has relinquished control over these vital licences, paving the way for Canal+ to consolidate its presence in the South African pay-TV and broadcasting sector.

The transfer includes the Individual Electronic Communications Service (I-ECS), the Individual Electronic Communications Network Service (I-ECNS), and the Radio Frequency Spectrum (RFS) licences. The sale could lead to a shift in MultiChoice's operations, allowing it to focus more on content creation and subscriber services rather than signal distribution.

Canal+, with the acquisition of Orbicom's distribution capabilities, may enhance operational efficiency and service offerings. The ICASA approval marks an essential regulatory milestone in Canal+'s broader plan to acquire Orbicom. The Government Gazette published a notice on 18 September 2025, formalising the approval of this transfer of control.

ICASA's decision ensures that licence transfers do not negatively impact competition or consumer interests. The authority's approval indicates its role in overseeing critical communications infrastructure. The acquisition by Canal+ enables the company to proceed with its strategic expansion while maintaining compliance with South Africa's Electronic Communications Act.

The transfer of Orbicom's licences to Canal+ has the potential to significantly impact the local media and telecommunications industry. As Canal+ continues to expand its operations in South Africa, audiences can expect a more diverse range of content and services in the future.
