AI technology collaboration: Penguin Solutions teams up with SK Telecom and SK hynix

In a significant move, Penguin Solutions, SK Telecom, and SK hynix have joined forces to develop comprehensive AI data centre solutions aimed at enhancing South Korea's AI infrastructure and competitiveness. The collaboration was officially announced during CES 2025 in Las Vegas.

Penguin Solutions, with its 25 years of experience in designing, building, deploying, and managing High-Performance Computing (HPC), brings its AI data centre (AIDC) systems to the table. These systems will integrate hardware and enable system-level solutions for the AI infrastructure.

SK Telecom, on the other hand, contributes its telecom infrastructure and AI cloud management. The company is launching a major GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) platform called Haein, built on over 1,000 Nvidia B200 GPUs. This powerful AI compute backbone aims to provide Korea with the necessary foundation for AI-driven innovations.

SK hynix collaborates on enabling memory technologies and system-related products to support these high-performance computing requirements. The goal is to overcome the limitations of memory technology and lead the expansion of the global AI ecosystem.

The GPUaaS platform supports Korea’s national AI competitiveness efforts, including backing the Ministry of Science and ICT’s ‘Proprietary AI Foundation Model’ programme. This initiative aims to build sovereign AI capabilities and strengthen the local AI ecosystem.

The use of proprietary virtualization and cloud management platforms by SK Telecom enhances flexible GPU resource allocation and supports the full AI service lifecycle from model development to deployment.

The partnership leverages each company's strengths. Penguin Solutions' AI data centre systems, SK Telecom's telecom infrastructure and AI cloud management, and SK hynix’s memory and hardware expertise come together to build a comprehensive AI data centre solution.

Penguin Solutions' Scyld ClusterWare software, combined with SKT's AI infrastructure management software, can simplify installation, deployment, and optimization of a full-stack AI deployment. The company's OriginAI solution architecture, based on Scyld ClusterWare intelligent management software, enriches the utilization rates of AI compute clusters.

This collaboration aims to enhance each company's ability to research, develop, and market high-performance, high-availability accelerated computing technologies and solutions. Penguin Solutions' intelligent, intuitive cluster management software streamlines the administration and optimizes the availability of computing resources, transforming them into sophisticated high-performance AI and HPC clusters.

Visitors to CES 2025 can catch a glimpse of Penguin Solutions' innovative offerings in the "Alliance Zone" of the SK Telecom booth #17726 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, from January 7-10, 2025.

In addition, Penguin Solutions, SMART Modular Technologies, and SK hynix plan to collaborate to develop innovative memory solutions for accelerated compute infrastructure environments.

Since 2017, Penguin Solutions has built AI factories for tech giants, major enterprises, government agencies, and academic institutions. Mark Adams, president and CEO of Penguin Solutions, stated that the company is committed to designing, building, deploying, and managing cutting-edge solutions to support customers on their AI journeys.

Ryu Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, stated that the collaboration agreement lays the foundation for building globally competitive AI data centers. This partnership is a significant step towards advancing South Korea's AI infrastructure and competitiveness.

Artificial-intelligence integration within Penguin Solutions' AI data centre systems will rely on SK Telecom's telecom infrastructure and AI cloud management.

SK hynix will contribute memory technologies and system-related products to enhance the performance of these AI infrastructure solutions.
