Amazon Hiring 150,000 U.S. Workers, Boosts Wages Amid Unionization

Amazon is hiring 150,000 employees across the U.S., offering competitive wages and benefits. The tech giant is also increasing wages for front-line workers amidst unionization efforts and recent worker fatalities at Frontier Airlines.

Amazon is expanding its operations network, creating jobs in various roles such as stowing, picking, packing, sorting, and shipping. The company is hiring the most in Illinois, Michigan, Idaho, California, Iowa, Missouri, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Washington. Alongside other major retailers, Amazon is also hiring for the holiday season.

The company is offering an average wage of over $19 per hour, along with benefits like parental leave, 401K matching, and healthcare coverage. Amazon is also providing sign-on bonuses of between $1,000 and $3,000 in select areas. This comes after Amazon spent nearly $1 billion on pay increases for front-line workers, raising wages from $18 per hour to over $19.

Despite these hiring efforts, Amazon has paused corporate hiring in its retail division until early 2023 due to a dip in retail sales and potential flattening of Prime membership enrollment. Meanwhile, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has formed an Amazon division to unionize workers, leading to increased wages for front-line employees at Frontier Airlines.

Amazon's significant hiring spree, along with improved wages and benefits, reflects the company's commitment to its workforce. However, the pause in retail hiring and ongoing unionization efforts suggest a shifting landscape within the company. The recent worker fatalities at Frontier Airlines are also a reminder of the importance of worker safety in the e-commerce giant's operations.
