In a collaboration with renowned musician John Mayer, Paul Reed Smith (PRS) has introduced four new colorways for their SE Silver Sky guitar, each inspired by traditional American fashion. The new finishes - Derby Red, Trad Blue, Laurel Green, and Dandy Lion (a vibrant yellow) - represent time-tested hues that have remained popular through decades.

John Mayer described these colors as connected to the heritage of American style, reflecting classic, enduring American fashion colors that evoke a sense of history and tradition. This aligns with the guitar’s design philosophy, merging vintage feel with modern playability, much like how traditional American fashion balances timelessness with contemporary trends.

The SE Silver Sky Maple models also have updated finishes, including Moon White, Stone Blue, Summit Purple, and Nylon Blue, further expanding the palette.

The PRS SE Silver Sky retains its original recipe, featuring a poplar body, bolt-on maple neck, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with signature bird inlays, three 635JM "S" single coil pickups, a 25.5" scale length, 8.5" fretboard radius, two-point steel tremolo, and vintage-style tuners.

These color choices are meant to celebrate decades of American fashion by bringing these traditional, historically popular hues to the guitar’s aesthetic. Dandy Lion, one of the new colorways, resembles Graffiti Yellow, a color first introduced to Fender by Jeff Beck.

The new PRS Silver Sky models are available now and priced at $849 apiece. This affordable version of a John Mayer guitar has sold in large quantities since its launch in 2022. Despite being outsold by PRS's Tele-like NF 53 since topping Reverb's best-selling guitar list multiple times, the PRS SE Silver Sky continues to be a popular choice among guitar enthusiasts.

PRS has emphasized that their strategy is not to dethrone Fender or Gibson from the top of the electric guitar hierarchy. Instead, they aim to offer unique and high-quality instruments that cater to a wide range of musicians. While there have been discussions about creating a headless guitar, no such models have been announced yet.

The aesthetic shake-up of the PRS SE Silver Sky has given it a more classic Stratocaster look. The new colorways, inspired by traditional American fashion, add a touch of history and tradition to this modern guitar. Whether you're a fan of John Mayer's music or simply appreciate a well-crafted instrument, the new PRS SE Silver Sky offers a fresh and appealing option for guitar enthusiasts.
