Archer's Midnight eVTOL Reaches New Heights: 7,000 Feet in Historic Flight
Archer Aviation's electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, 'Midnight', has achieved a significant milestone. It reached an altitude of 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) in its highest-ever flight, opening up new possibilities for urban air mobility.
Last month, 'Midnight' completed its longest flight to date, covering 55 miles (86 km) at speeds exceeding 126 mph (203 km/h). During this test flight, it reached speeds of over 120 miles per hour (193 kilometers per hour) and flew for a total of 45 miles (72 km).
Powered by battery packs containing numerous lithium-ion cells, 'Midnight' can carry a pilot alongside passengers with luggage. Unlike commercial airliners, eVTOLs like 'Midnight' are designed to operate in urban environments at altitudes between 1,500 and 4,000 feet (450 to 1,200 m). However, the ability to fly at 7,000 feet allows 'Midnight' to operate in cities with high skyscraper density without making costly detours, helping to avoid air congestion and terrestrial gridlock.
Archer Aviation, the manufacturer of 'Midnight', is working towards obtaining Federal Aviation Administration certification. It has begun commercializing operations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and has announced plans to operate the Midnight eVTOL in the city of Austin. The company aims to develop the aircraft into 'electric air taxis' for urban environments, revolutionizing urban air mobility.
