Around a Fourth of Germans Express Interest in Solar Balconies
Go green and save green! According to a survey by Verivox, a fourth of Germans are open to incorporating solar power into their balcony setup. While only 9% have already jumped on the bandwagon, a further 17% are planning to soon.
However, 21% of respondents found themselves lacking the necessary space, and 15% considered solar panels a poor investment. On the other hand, a significant 45% are yet undecided. The survey gathered data from 1007 participants, weighted to ensure it mirrored the nation's demographic.
A small investment with a big return
By setting up a balcony solar panel with an output of 800 watts, you could generate approximately 760 kWh of electricity annually under optimal conditions. If you use 60% of this output, you stand to save around 160 euros per year, considering the current average cost of 34.7 cents per kWh.
The initial cost for such a solar panel ranges between 500 and 800 euros for the balcony, and between 400 and 700 euros for the garden or terrace. In this example calculation, the system pays for itself in 2.5 to 5 years, with 20 years of operation netting savings of around 3160 euros in electricity costs.
Federal states offer incentives
Some federal states even offer incentives for the purchase of balcony solar panels. However, keep in mind that the solar panel's yield is highly dependent on its location.
For the best results, mount your solar modules on a south-facing balcony with a slight incline, avoiding shadows for maximum efficiency. Unfortunately, those with a north-facing balcony can only achieve a third of the potential yield, according to Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox.
Yet, even if conditions are less than optimal, investing in such technology is still worthwhile. As Storck put it, "It'll just take a bit longer."
