In the realm of technology, the past six months have seen signs of significant progress in the use of AI in code development. This development, first predicted by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, has become a source of concern for fresh graduates and professionals alike, particularly developers.

According to a recent study by Cloudsmith, around 42% of developers are already working with AI-filled codebases. However, trust and security concerns are major talking points, with nearly two-thirds (61.7%) of developers expressing ethical and security-related concerns about AI-generated code.

These concerns are not unfounded. Only 20% of developers trust AI-generated code completely, as per the same study. In fact, Google's own study found that many enterprises share these concerns about AI-generated code quality.

Not just the tech giants, but industry figures have also weighed in on the issue. Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Mark Benioff have all expressed concerns about the future of software engineers, suggesting that AI may replace them. In a surprising move, even Salesforce's CEO, Mark Benioff, suggested that the company might not hire any software engineers due to the rise of agentic AI.

Anthropic, the AI company, has had to advise candidates to stop using AI when applying for jobs, highlighting the potential impact of AI on the profession.

Despite the concerns, both Google and Microsoft have significantly advanced AI-generated code production since March 2023. Microsoft has integrated OpenAI's models, notably GPT-4, as 'AI detectors' in Office 365, GitHub, and Windows, enhancing productivity tools and enterprise adoption via the Azure OpenAI Service. By 2024, thousands of corporate clients were using these services, exceeding cloud GPU capacity. Google, on the other hand, continues to invest heavily in AI development with strategic partnerships.

However, the scale of AI-generated code doesn't quite add up yet, as per the Google study, despite alternative research pointing to an influx of AI code on a lower scale than what Amodei predicted by this point. Developers have expressed concerns about the accuracy of AI outputs, with 46% admitting they don't trust the accuracy of AI-generated code.

In the midst of these concerns, Anthropic's new AI model could be a game changer for developers. But until its impact is fully understood, developers find themselves manually fixing AI-generated code, which offsets the time saved by using the tools.

The ongoing discussions about the potential obsolescence of software developers by the technology they've helped build are a testament to the rapid pace of AI development and its potential impact on various professions. As we move forward, it will be interesting to see how the relationship between developers and AI evolves.
