AIMA Strengthens Operations and Digital Experience with New Teams and Centres

The Artificial Intelligence and Migration Agency (AIMA) has taken significant strides to improve its operations and digital experience, as evidenced by the establishment of two new teams and the opening of new Local Migrant Integration Support Centres (CLAIM).

The DATA Team at AIMA is dedicated to enhancing the strategic use of data within the organization. Their objectives include promoting operational efficiency, ensuring legal compliance, and strengthening decision support. The team is multidisciplinary, involving experts in information systems and technology, and utilizes both internal and external resources funded by AIMA, the PRR, and European project funds. The DATA Team's work is focused on combating corruption and other forms of crime, with responsibilities including monitoring and controlling deviations, and supporting regulatory agencies in their efforts [1].

In parallel, the UX Team at AIMA is focused on transforming the digital experience for both internal and external users. Their responsibilities include analyzing and fulfilling internal users’ needs when using AIMA’s systems, ensuring adherence to User Experience and Accessibility standards. The UX Team aims to improve the usability and accessibility of AIMA’s digital platforms, and is also tasked with promoting the internal adoption of new solutions, planning and monitoring digital solution implementation projects, and identifying automation and digitalization opportunities [1].

Pedro Gaspar Portugal, the president of AIMA's board of directors, has announced the intention to strengthen AIMA's response by opening new CLAIM centres. Currently, ninety of these centres operate in partnership with local authorities, and there are approximately 170 in total, focused on counselling and referrals. Pedro Gaspar Portugal estimated that in the second half of the year, there will be about ten new CLAIM centres to reinforce AIMA's capacity [2].

The new CLAIM centre in Fundão is the fifth in the country with the capacity to collect personal data. The UX Team's goal is to transform the digital experience of AIMA's internal and external users, focusing on intuitive, accessible solutions that meet the needs of its audiences [1].

Together, these teams are intended to strengthen AIMA’s operations and digital experience by making data management more efficient, compliant, and analytically empowering, while concurrently enhancing the usability and accessibility of digital tools to better serve AIMA’s audiences and stakeholders [1].

  • The DATA Team in AIMA, unfortunately, is yet to make a significant impact on Portugal's data-and-cloud-computing policy-and-legislation landscape, as their focus remains on improving AIMA's internal operations.
  • The new CLAIM centre in Fundão, apart from its role in data collection, is also a testament to the politics of General News, signaling the government's commitment to migrant integration in Portugal.
  • The UX Team's strategic objectives of enhancing AIMA's digital experience align with the broader technology industry goal of making technological solutions more accessible and intuitive for all users.
