Artificial intelligence pope proposal meets rejection from the real Pope, revealing his apprehensions
Pope Leo XIV Expresses Concerns Over Artificial Intelligence
Pope Leo XIV, the current leader of the Catholic Church, has been vocal about the potential pitfalls of artificial intelligence (AI) since his election in early May. In an interview with Elise Ann Allen, the Rome correspondent for Crux and the author of the biography "Leo XIV: Citizen of the World, Missionary of the XXI Century," the pope shared his concerns about AI and its impact on human dignity and employment.
The interview, published in Spanish by Penguin Peru on September 18, touched on various topics, including the abuse crisis, the pope's views on Donald Trump, and the challenges he faces as a world leader. During the discussion, Pope Leo XIV expressed his discomfort at the proposal to create an AI-version of him for virtual audiences. He also declined authorization for the creation of an artificial intelligence pope that would answer questions on a website.
The pope believes that there is a potential crisis of not having enough decent jobs for people due to technology and artificial intelligence. He fears that the digital world might go its own way, leaving humans as pawns or by the wayside, particularly in employment. The pope stated that the human heart could get lost in the midst of technological development, as things are going right now.
Pope Leo XIV's belief that human life has meaning because of human interactions and relationships, not artificial intelligence, is a central theme in his biography. His choice of name, Leo, honors Pope Leo XIII, who authored the encyclical "Rerum Novarum" about labor and workers' rights during the Industrial Revolution. The pope emphasizes that the church is not against technological advances, but insists on maintaining a relationship between faith and reason, and science and faith.
The pope expressed concern that losing the relationship between faith and reason could leave science as an empty, cold shell, causing harm to humanity. He believes that AI could pose a threat to human dignity, and he urges caution in its development and use. The interview with Pope Leo XIV discussed these and other important issues, providing insights into the thoughts and concerns of this modern-day missionary of the XXI century.
