Get Interactive: Learning How to Measure Air Quality and Control Traffic Through Sensors - A Guided Exploration!

Dive into the exciting world of sensor technology and urban development, where children and adults can learn, collaborate, and innovate together! On June 24th, at the Central Library Carl-Brandts-Haus, two enlightening workshops are being held as part of the launch of the citylab.mg. This new platform, launched under the working title "Citizen Lab" and formed as part of the Smart City strategy, is all about engaging the community in digitizing urban spaces.

First up for the young minds at 3 pm is the "City Researchers Wanted!" workshop, designed for children aged 12 and above. This 90-minute workshop empowers participants to construct their own DIY sensor devices, measure values such as temperature and humidity, and brainstorm how this data can contribute to a better, smarter city. During the opening ceremony, the results of the workshop will be exhibited in a pop-up showroom.

At 5 pm, the opening commences with presentations on digital projects, showroom exhibitions, and a lecture by project partner CityLAB Berlin. The Smart City team provides a sneak peek into their planned activities. Afterwards, a walk-through pop-up showroom welcomes you to explore current Smart City projects and innovative ideas from the city society in a casual, laid-back atmosphere. There will be short pitches and opportunities to chat with the project team. The highlight of the evening, at 6 pm, is a speech by Mayor Felix Heinrichs. At 7 pm, the adult-oriented workshop, "Environmental Data for the Smart City," gets underway. Join in to build your own environmental monitoring stations, connect sensors, program simple processes, and grasp how digital data can contribute to sustainable urban development.

The citylab.mg opening event is part of the Mönchengladbach Digital Week, during which the Vitus city collaborates with 26 partners to offer a total of 54 events throughout the city, making digitalization processes tangible. The aim of citylab.mg is to continue this enthusiasm and commitment to digitalization throughout the year. To achieve this, a pop-up character has been intentionally chosen. This will enable citylab.mg to establish its tents not only in the central library but also in various districts and engage with the community on site.

Registration for the citylab workshops, the opening, and all events of the Digital Week is available online at www.moenchengladbach.de/de/stadtgespraeche/digitalwoche. The number of participants for the workshops is limited to 15 individuals. To make a difference in your city, why not consider joining one of the workshops and having a hand in shaping the future?

Enhanced Insights:Harnessing workshops to construct user-friendly sensor devices like weather stations or noise monitors, coupled with STEM components, captivates children’s interest in technology. To instill a sense of community involvement and take data usage a step further, encourage children to participate in projects tackling urban issues, such as air quality or traffic flow. By visualizing this collected data and presenting findings to the community, children's work becomes an integral part of urban development.

For adults, workshops tailored to complex sensor technologies and data analytics tools can broaden their technical skills. Case studies using real-world examples can help illustrate the application of sensor data in urban planning decisions. To enhance professional development, offer training on integrating sensor data into existing city projects, and facilitate networking opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing. Lastly, engaging adults in community projects enables them to build a sense of ownership and responsibility towards their city.

  1. Utilizing sensor technology in the "Environmental Data for the Smart City" workshop, adults can construct their own environmental monitoring stations, manage data about air quality – a crucial aspect of lifestyle and general news – and employ it for sustainable urban development.
  2. The citylab.mg, with its focus on education-and-self-development and technology, offers workshops for children aged 12 and above where they can design and build user-friendly sensor devices to collect data on traffic or air quality, thereby fostering interactive learning and contributing to general news and self-development.
