Audio innovator, Dante, reshaping audio quality at Apogee Studio.
Apogee Studio in Santa Monica Expands Listening Options with Dante Technology
Apogee Studio, located in the vibrant city of Santa Monica, has expanded its listening options by implementing Dante technology, a widely adopted digital audio networking protocol. This innovative setup allows for live, immersive mixes to be distributed across multiple rooms, providing a unique and flexible listening experience for engineers and artists.
At the heart of this setup is the Dante network, which operates as a separate entity within the studio. This network facilitates the distribution of pristine, low-latency audio to all the rooms, ensuring that the audio quality remains consistent across the entire facility.
Each remote room is equipped with a Mac running Dante Virtual Soundcard, a software application that transforms the computer into a Dante-enabled device. The Dante network and Dante Virtual Soundcard work together to propagate audio throughout all the rooms at Apogee Studio.
The studio's audio system is based around Apogee's Symphony Mk II Special Edition, a versatile interface that supports three connectivity modules, including Thunderbolt, Pro Tools + Dante, and Waves SoundGrid. In Apogee Studio, the Symphony Mk II is equipped with an optional Dante hardware module, further enhancing its capabilities.
Renowned AV legend, Bob Clearmountain, who is known for his work with major acts such as Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Pretenders, and Bryan Adams, turned to Dante to expand the listening options at Apogee Studio. Clearmountain described the setup as "fairly painless," indicating its ease of use and integration.
People in the remote rooms can monitor the live immersive audio stream through their Symphony MK IIs, matching the sound heard through the Atmos speakers in the main studio. This setup allows the audience to experience the full, immersive performance regardless of location, enhancing both the creative workflow and client experience.
Apogee Studio, with its innovative use of Dante technology, continues to push the boundaries of professional recording studios, providing a unique and flexible listening environment for its clients. The studio has hosted legendary recording artists and up-and-coming artist showcases, solidifying its position as a premier recording facility in Santa Monica, a city of contrasts.
