Australia-Malaysia Project Boosts Cyber-Resilience with Incident Response Benchmarking

A collaborative project between Australian and Malaysian researchers aims to bolster Malaysia's cyber-resilience. Funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and supported by the National Cyber Security Agency of Malaysia (NACSA), the initiative seeks to develop a reference model for assessing cyber incident response practices in Malaysian organisations.

Led by a joint team from the University of Melbourne (UoM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the project will create a benchmarking tool to evaluate practical cyber incident responses. This aligns with Australia's Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) with Malaysia, which includes enhancing Malaysia's cyber-capabilities.

Phase two of the project, starting in May 2023, will involve three case studies and produce a benchmarking report. Up to 100 cybersecurity managers and executives across critical infrastructure sectors will receive training on how to evaluate incident-response practices, empowering them to improve their organisations' resilience.

The project, headed by Dr Atif Ahmad, Associate Professor at UoM, is expected to significantly contribute to Malaysia's cyber-incident response capability. By providing a robust assessment tool and training key personnel, the initiative supports Malaysia's goal of strengthening its cyber-resilience.
