Oops! Polestar, makers of the electric Polestar 2, is recalling more than 27,800 units in the U.S. due to a potential problem with their rearview camera display while reversing.
The Swedish electric car manufacturer admitted that the 2021-2025 Polestar 2s might suffer from "visualization issues" with the rearview camera display while in reverse and could show a "Camera is temporarily unavailable" message.
Gear up for troubling times ahead, as a malfunctioning rearview camera display can raise the likelihood of a smash-up, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These pesky 2021-2025 Polestar 2 electric vehicles were produced between July 2020 and late November 2021.
What's the reason behind this recycle? A synchronization hiccup between the Parking Assist Camera (PAC) and the Infotainment Head Unit (IHU) causing the issue, and a dud in the IHU's video receiving hardware[2][3].
Don't worry, Polestar promised a free software update to fix the fiasco. This update will guarantee a constant high-speed connection between the PAC and IHU and will implement a restart function for the IHU hardware if a synchronization error arises[3].
In case you own one of the recalled electric Polestar 2s, you'll get a letter notifying you starting June 19[3]. The Polestar 2, introduced in the U.S. in 2020, is no longer manufactured for the American market, but Polestar's sleek electric vehicles can still be found in 27 global markets.
