Bell Canada's 2026 Satellite Service to Revolutionize Rural Connectivity

Bell Canada is set to revolutionize connectivity in rural areas. The company, led by EVP/CTO Mark McDonald, has announced plans to launch a direct-to-cell satellite service by 2026, in partnership with AST SpaceMobile. This service will provide video, voice, text, and broadband data to customers in hard-to-reach locations.

Bell Canada's strategy is to initially focus on data and voice capabilities. This is because cellphone manufacturers are already integrating basic satellite service into their devices. The company will wait for AST to launch more low-earth-orbit satellites before the service can begin. Bell Canada already owns the necessary spectrum for the service and will make regulatory submissions to the federal government before the commercial launch.

The exact commercial launch date has not been specified, but customer trials are expected in 2026. Full commercial launch details will follow after the trials.

Bell Canada's direct-to-mobile phone satellite service, through its partnership with AST SpaceMobile, aims to bridge the connectivity gap in rural and challenging geographies. The service, expected to launch in 2026, will offer video, voice, text, and broadband data to customers. The company awaits AST's satellite launches and regulatory approvals before commencing the service.
