BMW B47 Engine Analysis: Dependability, Economy, Modification, Advantages and Disadvantages
The BMW B47 engine, a member of BMW's modular B-series engine family, made its debut in 2014 as a replacement for the N47. This turbocharged inline-four diesel engine has proven to be a strong and dependable power source, capable of handling high mileage with proper maintenance.
The B47 engine offers a range of power outputs, depending on the variant. Variants such as the B47D20 produce 114 hp, while others like the B47C/D20 offer 148 hp, 161 hp, 188 hp, 221 hp, and 228 hp. The engine's torque ranges from 270 Nm to a robust 500 Nm.
One of the B47's strongest traits is its efficiency. Thanks to common-rail direct injection, variable geometry turbocharging, AdBlue SCR injection, and meeting Euro 6 emissions standards, the engine delivers impressive fuel economy. Smaller models like the 116d or 320d can achieve 50-60 MPG (UK) on long runs, while heavier SUVs like the X3 or X4 return 40+ MPG in real-world driving.
However, the B47 engine is less robust under extreme tuning than BMW's six-cylinder diesels. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes with BMW-approved oil, checking coolant and EGR condition, and taking the car on longer drives to help the DPF regenerate, will greatly extend engine life.
Common trouble spots for the B47 include EGR valve and cooler failures, DPF clogging, turbocharger wear, and timing chain wear at very high mileage. Later B47 versions, like the B47TÜ1, added twin-turbo setups and 48-volt mild hybrid systems, further boosting both efficiency and drivability.
For enthusiasts seeking more power, upgraded intercoolers, performance exhaust/downpipes, and larger turbocharger swaps are possible. The B47 engine also offers strong torque delivery, especially in twin-turbo versions.
The B47 engine can be found in various BMW models such as the 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3, X4, and certain MINI models. However, the latest BMW models, like the G45 X3 (2024/2025), no longer offer pure diesel versions like the B47 but focus on hybrid or electric models.
Despite its strengths, the popularity of diesel engines, including the B47, has waned in some markets due to emissions regulations. Nevertheless, the B47 engine remains a reliable and efficient choice for those seeking a high-performing diesel engine from BMW.
