BMW & Nissan Adapt Strategies for Mexico's Evolving Automotive Sector
BMW and Nissan are adapting their strategies to meet evolving demands in Mexico's automotive sector. BMW is investing heavily in electric vehicle (EV) production and infrastructure, while Nissan is enhancing its logistics network.
BMW is expanding its presence in Mexico, constructing an 80,000 sq.m battery manufacturing facility in San Luis Potosi. This €800m investment, set to employ over 500 people, will produce the Neue Klasse electric sports activity vehicle from 2027. The company is also working with authorities to develop charging infrastructure and control battery degradation in Mexico's diverse weather conditions.
To improve vehicle distribution, BMW is redesigning its network and implementing digital tools. This will provide transparency and better manage vehicle distribution in Mexico, the fifth largest vehicle exporter and fourth largest exporter of automotive parts in the world. The company is also extending commercial relationships and introducing new transportation concepts to adapt to evolving demands.
Nissan, meanwhile, is investing in intermodal FVL in North America to ensure deliveries despite disruptions. The company is moving from 80% rail to dedicated vessel and driving haulaway trucks from Mexico to the US. This shift aims to combat capacity crunch and harness data and analytics, as discussed at the Finished Vehicle Logistics North America 2024 conference. Nissan is also adapting its network in Mexico to keep up with fluctuating consumer demands, despite challenges like labor and equipment shortages.
Both BMW and Nissan are taking significant steps to adapt to the changing landscape of Mexico's automotive industry. BMW's focus on EV production and infrastructure, along with network improvements, positions it well for the future. Nissan's logistics enhancements ensure reliable deliveries and help combat industry challenges. These strategies align with key issues and opportunities discussed at the Finished Vehicle Logistics North America 2024 conference.
