BMW's Dingolfing Plant Celebrates Milestone with 500,000th Electric Car

In the heart of Germany, BMW's largest car factory in Europe, the Dingolfing plant, has reached a significant milestone. The plant, spanning over 300 hectares, has produced its 500,000th electric car, marking a significant step forward in BMW's commitment to a sustainable future.

The 500,000th electric car, an i5 xDrive40 Touring in Individual Twilight Purple, rolled off the production line recently. The Dingolfing plant is currently producing five plug-in hybrid models and four fully electric ones, including the i5 Sedan, i5 Touring, i7, iX, and the upcoming iX5 and iX7.

Beyond cars, the Dingolfing plant is also a hub for electric motor and battery production for BMW's plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs). Part of the workforce at Dingolfing is dedicated to making bodies for Rolls-Royce models, demonstrating the plant's versatility in producing luxury vehicles.

By the end of the year, BMW expects electric cars to account for about 40% of total production. This shift towards electrification is part of BMW's broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Looking ahead, the 3 Series production is planned to be moved from Munich to Dingolfing, with the upcoming "G50" model of the 3 Series expected to receive an electric variant. The BMW 5 Series model line is also likely to be relocated from Munich to Dingolfing, and it has been announced that the new version of the model will also be offered as an electric variant.

However, not all BMW models produced at Dingolfing are electric. The 8 Series Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe are not offered with electric drivetrains at the Dingolfing plant. The entire 8er lineup is reportedly set to be discontinued, with production believed to end in 2026. Meanwhile, the iX is unlikely to see a successor, with production expected to continue until mid-2028.

The Dingolfing plant, which marked its 50th anniversary two years ago, is among the most productive plants in BMW's global network. In 2024, the plant assembled 297,761 vehicles, a 2% increase over the previous year. The plant employs more than 18,500 people who build around 1,350 cars per day.

Despite the challenges posed by the transition to electrification, BMW Group has sold three million electric vehicles, a testament to the company's commitment to sustainable mobility. The Dingolfing plant's 500,000th electric car is a clear indication that this commitment is paying off.

Only the plants in Spartanburg, Dadong, and Regensburg produced more cars last year than Dingolfing, demonstrating the plant's significant contribution to BMW's global production. As BMW continues to push the boundaries of sustainable mobility, the Dingolfing plant will undoubtedly play a crucial role in this journey.
