Businesses Continue to Struggle with Cyber Maturity Levels
The technology research firm GigaOm, in collaboration with Commvault, has released the 2024 Cyber Recovery Readiness Report. This comprehensive study, based on data analysis of survey responses from 1,000 security and IT professionals across 11 countries, sheds light on strategies that businesses can employ to increase their resilience against cyberattacks.
According to the report, five key capabilities, or resiliency markers, have been identified as aiding faster recovery from cyberattacks and minimising breaches. These markers are:
- Regular testing of recovery plans, with 70% of cyber mature organisations testing their plans quarterly compared to 43% of less prepared organisations.
- Defined runbooks, roles, and processes for incident response.
- The existence of an isolated environment to store an immutable copy of the data.
- Having an organised system, such as a known-clean dark site or secondary system, in place for quicker recovery from cyberattacks.
- Implementing solutions like Commvault Cleanroom Recovery and Cloud Rewind, which help reduce recovery times and improve preparedness against cyber events.
Chris Ray, GigaOm's Cybersecurity Analyst, emphasises the importance of organisations thinking about resilience in layers. He states that this needs to rapidly change if companies want to be resilient and have the upper hand against bad actors.
The report further reveals that cyber mature organisations, those that have deployed at least four of the five resiliency markers, recover 41% faster than respondents with only zero or one marker. Additionally, 54% of cyber mature organisations are completely confident in their ability to recover from a breach, contrasted with only 33% of less prepared organisations.
However, the research indicates that less than 85% of respondents surveyed think about resilience in layers, suggesting there is room for improvement in this area.
The 2024 Cyber Recovery Readiness Report is a valuable resource for businesses seeking to improve their resilience against cyberattacks. By understanding and implementing these resiliency markers, companies can better defend themselves and recover more quickly from potential cyber events.
