In the rapidly evolving world of electric vehicles (EVs), two Chinese battery manufacturers, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and BYD, have solidified their positions as market leaders in the first half of 2025.

According to recent data, CATL holds a 37.9% share of the global EV battery market, while BYD follows closely with a 17.8% share [1][2][5]. Together, they account for approximately 55.7% of the global EV battery installations.

CATL's dominance is evident in its battery installations in July, which totaled 23.11 GWh. Meanwhile, BYD's installations stood at 11.83 GWh [3].

The strong position of CATL and BYD is closely linked to the surge in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery demand, which has driven their growth in China and globally. In China, the total battery installation volume in July was 55.9 GWh, up 34.3% year-on-year but down 4.0% from June. LFP batteries had an installation volume of 44.9 GWh in July, accounting for 80.4% of the total volume [7].

Notably, CATL, BYD, and CALB had the highest shipment volumes in the LFP battery market in July, with market shares of 34.54%, 26.34%, and 8.15%, respectively [8]. CALB's market share in China's EV battery market increased from 7.55% in June to 8.40% in July [9].

In the ternary battery market, the production volume in July was 29.5 GWh, up 26.4% year-on-year and up 0.1% month-on-month. CATL, CALB, and Svolt Energy were the top three manufacturers in July, with market shares of 69.59%, 9.43%, and 8.96%, respectively [4].

China exported 14.8 GWh of power batteries in July, of which ternary batteries accounted for 8.4 GWh and LFP batteries accounted for 6.2 GWh [6].

The growth of CATL and BYD is a testament to the expanding EV market, especially in China and Europe. Their combined volume (280.8 GWh) dominated the market, reflecting strong growth and consolidation by Chinese battery makers [1][2].

The data for China's EV battery market in July also shows a slight decrease in CATL's market share from 43.67% in June to 41.40%, and a similar decrease in BYD's market share from 21.47% to 21.18% [3]. However, this slight dip does not diminish the overall dominance of these two companies in the global EV battery market.
