CISOs Weigh AI Risks and Benefits, Most Allow Generative Tool Use
A recent survey by ClubCISO, a leading community for Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), has shed light on the awareness and management of AI tools within organisations. The report revealed that nearly six out of ten CISOs are mindful of data protection and intellectual property implications when using AI tools, with over half understanding how these tools use and share data. Notably, only 9% of CISOs lack a policy governing AI tool usage.
The survey, which included CISOs from various organisations such as Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, Microsoft, IBM, and Google, found a mixed perception of generative AI. Half of the respondents viewed it as a force for good and a security enabler, while 25% considered it a risk to their organisational security. Interestingly, nearly half of the CISOs surveyed allow the use of generative AI tools in their organisations, indicating a balanced approach to AI integration.
The final decision on which AI use is admitted within an organisation lies with the CISO office, highlighting their crucial role in navigating the complex landscape of AI tools and their potential implications on data protection and security.
The ClubCISO survey underscores the growing awareness and careful consideration of AI tools among CISOs. With a majority acknowledging data protection implications and a significant portion allowing generative AI use, organisations are demonstrating a proactive approach to AI integration. However, the differing views on generative AI's impact on security serve as a reminder of the ongoing debate and the need for continuous evaluation and policy refinement.
