Compatibility Check: DJI Drones and Remote Controller Pairings

In the fast-paced world of drone technology, keeping up with the latest remote controllers can be a challenge. DJI, a leading name in the industry, offers a variety of remote controllers designed to cater to different drone models and user needs. However, it's essential to understand the compatibility issues that may arise to ensure a seamless flying experience.

Compatibility Challenges

Compatibility issues can stem from several factors. For instance, some DJI accessories, such as the DJI Cellular Dongle and DJI Cellular Dongle 2, only support specific drones. Using unsupported models will disable features like Enhanced Transmission. Firmware and app versions must also be updated on both the drone and controller to ensure functionality and avoid connection failures. SIM cards used in dongles need to have PINs disabled to function. Additionally, certain apps or APKs are compatible only with specific controllers.

DJI Remote Controllers

DJI RC 2 and DJI RC Pro 2

The DJI RC 2, released alongside the DJI Air 3, and its high-end counterpart, the DJI RC Pro 2, are compact, affordable, and smart controllers. Both are compatible with Mini 4 Pro, Air 3, Air 3S, DJI Neo, and more. The DJI RC Pro 2 recently received a security upgrade, including a screen lock feature.

DJI RC-N3, RC-N2, RC Pro Enterprise, RC Plus, and RC Plus 2

The DJI RC-N3 and RC-N2 are designed for drones such as the DJI Air 3S and others, with apps tailored for commercial or enterprise use. The DJI RC Pro Enterprise, DJI RC Plus, and DJI RC Plus 2 are controllers designed for enterprise-level drones, supporting special applications like DroneDeploy.

DJI RC Motion 2

The DJI RC Motion 2, released in 2023, allows for drone flight using just one hand but is no longer purely a motion controller. It is compatible with DJI Avata, Mini 3 Pro, Mavic 3, Mavic 3 Classic, Mavic 3 Pro.

DJI Smart Controller and DJI FPV V2

The DJI Smart Controller, known for its built-in 5.5-inch 1080p screen and many smart controls, is compatible with the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0, Mini 2, Mavic Air 2, Air 2S, Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 2 Zoom, and Mavic 2 Enterprise drones. The DJI FPV V2, designed for DJI's FPV drones (DJI FPV, DJI Avata), requires an FPV headset.

DJI Mavic Mini Controller

The Mavic Mini Controller is compatible with the Mavic Mini and Mini SE drones. It uses the Enhanced Wi-Fi protocol for communication.

DJI FPV V2 and DJI Motion Controller

The DJI FPV V2 and the DJI Motion Controller run the O3 video transmission, specially optimized for FPV flight. They are meant for FPV drones (DJI FPV, DJI Avata).

DJI RC-N1 and DJI RC-N2

The DJI RC-N1 and DJI RC-N2, while lacking built-in screens, are designed for specific drones and offer tailored controls. The DJI RC-N2 comes with O4 video transmission, an upgraded antenna, and support for the 5.1 GHz frequency band.

Avoiding Compatibility Issues

To avoid compatibility issues, users should verify specific controller/drone pairings, keep firmware/software updated, and check accessory requirements. With a wide range of controllers available, from casual-use (RC 2) to enterprise (RC Pro Enterprise and RC Plus series), each supporting a tailored set of drones, DJI offers a solution for every user.
