Take Two: A Tarnished Gaming Studio's Kazakhstan Comeback

YAKUTIA.INFO digs deep into the drama-plagued world of Fntastic, the developers behind the troubled game, The Day Before. Once supported by Yakutia through IT-Park, this team behind the game notoriously botched The Day Before and later attempted to crowdfund their way back, only to end up on Kazakhstan's list of "reliable and socially responsible enterprises". Let's recap their tumultuous journey.

The Gontovtsev brothers, the founders of Fntastic, enjoyed initial support from republic IT-Park. They hoped to create a groundbreaking game for Yakutian gaming company Mytona, dubbed The Day Before. However, American bloggers caught trailer car travel objects, lighting, and architecture similarities with Life is Strange 2, revealing stolen assets. Further investigation revealed more copied moments and entire scenes from other games, as reported in prominent Russian tech journal, IXBT.com. The game's steam top anticipation ratings and worldwide demand wasn't enough to save it from a three-year delay and poor quality upon release, leading to upset pre-buyers demanding refunds.

Fntastic relocated to Kazakhstan in 2022 and faded from international spotlight as funds dwindled. After some time, they returned looking for financial support for new projects, claiming to have learned from their mistakes and planned to operate transparently and honestly. Their fundraising attempt failed despite skepticism toward their dismal track record.

Their latest announcement is a press release to the media, claiming inclusion in Kazakhstan's registry of "reliable and socially responsible enterprises". This means they consistently pay taxes, avoid bankruptcy, and maintain clean documents - but there's not much more to boast. It appears they exist without issuing significant issues with tax authorities.

To the uninitiated, the company seems philanthropic or of great importance to Kazakhstan. In reality, they're just staying out of trouble with Kazakhstan's tax authorities, dutifully paying their dues. Undeniably, this is quite a letdown considering Fntastic's previous financial support from Yakutia.

The Gontovtsev brothers, upon relocating to Kazakhstan, continued their work on new projects, hoping to improve their tarnished reputation. In their efforts, they utilized the latest smartphones and gadgets, armed with the power of modern technology, to present their ideas more efficiently. Despite their inclusion in Kazakhstan's registry of "reliable and socially responsible enterprises," questions regarding their transparency and honesty towards their past mistakes linger.
