Customers opt for the Shein platform due to its unique offerings and diverse selection.
In a recent survey commissioned by Shein, it was revealed that a significant majority of respondents value unique items and appreciate the variety offered by the fast-fashion retailer. According to the data gathered from two surveys conducted by The Harris Poll, with over 2,000 U.S. adults participating in each, 80% of respondents chose Shein for its ability to offer unique items.
The survey also found that 69% of respondents said they value unique items more, and 68% said they would wear unique items more often. Sixty-six percent of surveyed groups reported wearing their Shein clothing "just as much or more often than their clothing from similar brands." Meanwhile, 64% said they wore their Shein clothing "just as much or more often than their clothing from higher-priced brands."
Shein's on-demand business model plays a crucial role in its success. By producing items on-demand, Shein is able to reduce waste, offer a vast variety of products, and keep costs low. George Chiao, president of Shein U.S., stated that this model allows Shein to overcome the challenge of high costs associated with following fashion trends.
However, Shein's popularity has not been without controversy. The retailer has been under investigation by U.S. congresspeople over forced labor concerns, and the bulk of lawsuits filed against Shein are related to copyright infringement from independent designers and other brands. In 2023, Shein disclosed that it found two cases of child labor within its supply chain.
Despite these concerns, affordability remains a key factor in Shein's appeal. Ninety percent of respondents believe that affordability should not compromise their ability to buy clothes that make them feel good. The low prices offered by Shein have been met with speculation and investigations, but they have also contributed to its popularity.
Seventy-nine percent of respondents found the variety of items on Shein's platform appealing when looking for clothes that fit their style. As shoppers continue to seek out unique and affordable clothing options, Shein is poised to remain a popular choice.
It's important to note that the search results do not provide information on who conducted the investigation into Shein's shopping habits. The surveys were conducted between June 17 and June 25, and Aug. 6 and Aug. 8.
While concerns over copyright infringement and forced labor continue to surround Shein, the survey results suggest that the retailer's focus on unique items and affordability is resonating with U.S. shoppers. As Shein continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how it addresses these concerns and maintains its popularity.
