Customs office discovered 50,000 cigarettes through extensive usage of X-ray technological devices.

In a significant development, the Main Customs Office Stralsund, Germany, has announced the discovery of a substantial cache of cigarettes hidden in a Polish truck during a routine check. The inspection, which took place on federal highway 24 in the direction of Hamburg, uncovered a total of 50,000 cigarettes.

The discovery was made possible by the use of large-scale X-ray technology and the intuition of customs officers. Six boxes of cigarettes of different brands, each bearing Polish tax stamps, were found in the driver's cab, while two more boxes were discovered in storage compartments on the passenger side and the trailer.

A tax notice of over 9,600.00 EUR was served to the 30-year-old driver of the truck, and a tax evasion case has been opened against him. The investigation into this cigarette smuggling case has been handed over to the Customs Investigation Office Hamburg, with a branch office in Rostock. The name of the customs investigation office that took over the further investigation is not provided.

Sabine Mattil, spokesperson for the Main Customs Office Stralsund, made a statement regarding the discovery. She emphasised the importance of customs officers' vigilance in protecting the European Union's financial interests and ensuring fair competition for legitimate businesses.

The outcome of the investigation is still pending. Press inquiries can be directed to Fanny Tumanow-Lammers at 03831-356 1103 or [email protected].
