Exploring Giessen's Geological Wonders: The 'Wealth of Stone' Bike Tour

The tour begins at the Grauwackenstein quarries in Heuchelheim, a site that showcases the ancient shale formations of the area. The tour continues to the basalt quarries at Schiffenberg, where you can marvel at the volcanic rock formations. Along the way, you'll also visit the sand pit at Giessen's North Cross, another fascinating geological site.
The 'Wealth of Stone' bike tour also takes you to some of Giessen's notable landmarks. These include the Schiffenberg and the Badensburg in Giessen. The tour also offers a chance to explore the unique natural landscape of the Giessen district, such as the nature reserve Bergwerkswald and Hanngelstein.
The development of this tour was implemented by the institution Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald. A tour brochure, titled 'Active in Giessen', includes a description of the 'Wealth of Stone' bike tour, along with GPS data, and is available free of charge at the Tourist Information (School Street 4).

These geological wonders have formed throughout the region's geological history, with limestones, sandstone, and basalt all playing a part in shaping the landscape.

The Tourist Information is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.
