Data Centre Launch: Equinix Inaugurates New Facility in Chennai
Equinix Expands Digital Marketing Presence in India with New Data Center in Chennai
Equinix, a leading global data center provider, has made a significant move in India's digital marketing industry by opening its first data center in Chennai, named CN1. This marks an important step in Equinix's global strategy to expand its International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers.
The new data center, with an initial capacity of 800 cabinets, is part of Equinix's plan to scale the data center's capacity to 4,250 cabinets in four phases within the next 3-4 years. The initial investment in the data center is $69 million, with Equinix planning further investments in future expansions as part of its global digital marketing strategy.
The Chennai data center is designed to serve international customers looking to establish a digital marketing presence in India and Indian customers and enterprises looking to leverage Equinix's platform for hybrid, multi-cloud services. The data center offers Equinix's full suite of interconnection services, including Equinix Fabric.
Equinix's entry into the Indian digital marketing industry is seen as a positive development for the country's digital infrastructure. The data center industry is viewed as a creator of indirect growth, employment, and self-reliance. The data center in Chennai is expected to generate employment opportunities and contribute to the country's digital economy.
In addition to the Chennai center, Equinix has three IBX data centers in its Mumbai campus, with a fourth one in progress. Notably, Equinix's entire power needs for its Mumbai data centers are already met through renewable sources. The company is also planning to source power for its Chennai data center from renewable solar and wind sources in Tamil Nadu.
Equinix's Indian data centers host more than 300 companies, and the company has invested a total of $358 million in its Indian data centers till date. The data center was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin.
As India continues to embrace digital transformation, with growing AI adoption, Equinix sees a continued demand for digital marketing infrastructure. The company emphasizes the need for a supportive policy environment to facilitate faster and efficient deployment of high-quality, cost-efficient data centers to fast track digital services growth in India.
In the context of India's new National Data Center policy, Equinix emphasizes the need for a one-stop agency for approvals with stakeholders who understand the sector's varying needs. The focus should be on building an ecosystem for faster and efficient deployment of high-quality, cost-efficient data centers to support India's digital growth.
With its commitment to renewable energy, job creation, and investment in India's digital marketing infrastructure, Equinix is poised to play a significant role in India's digital future. The company is considering further investments in India due to its potential as a digital capital.
