In the world of video game speedrunning, the concept of official speedrun seeds is gaining traction. These seeds, or fixed world generation codes, create a predetermined environment for runners to tackle, promoting fairness and optimization.

One of the most notable examples of this can be seen in Minecraft's Set Seed Glitchless (SSG) category. In this speedrun, players race through the game using a known, fixed world seed. This means that the locations of resources, terrain, structures, and mobs are all predetermined, allowing runners to optimize routes and aim for precise, flawless runs. The "Glitchless" part of the category restricts the run to no bugs or exploits, setting a level playing field for all competitors.

This contrasts with the Random Seed Glitchless (RSG) category, where the seed is unknown, adding an element of unpredictability.

While Minecraft is a prime example, other games may also have community-accepted seeds or challenge runs. However, these are less formalized as "official seeds."

The implementation of official speedrun seeds would significantly change the skillset needed for a successful run. Instead of relying on luck in world generation, runners would need to focus on planning, execution, and optimization.

Recently, REPO, a gaming company, released a video featuring a world record level 10 speedrun from LLMarkerz in Minecraft's SSG category. The video was hosted by REPO's marketing head, Pontus Sundström, and a semibot with the "mind of one of the developers."

Sundström expressed excitement for the speedrun, praising it as amazing and impressive. He also mentioned that Lethal Company, another gaming company, has already implemented official speedrun seeds. However, the semibot developer reacted sternly when Sundström mentioned Lethal Company, suggesting that the implementation of speedrun seeds is a topic worth considering for their own games as well.

The semibot developer also expressed enthusiasm for adding official speedrun seeds, stating that they make them happy to see. They believe that these seeds would provide a standard playing field for runners, helping them significantly reduce their times.

As the gaming community continues to evolve, the concept of official speedrun seeds is set to play a significant role in competitive gaming. By providing a fair and standardized environment, these seeds promise to shift the focus from luck to skill, planning, and execution, making for more exciting and competitive speedruns.
