Disappointing commencement for Jenoptik in the fiscal year - Difficulties encountered by Jenoptik during the initial phase of its financial year.
Hey there! Let's dive into the first-quarter financials of Jenoptik, the tech powerhouse headquartered in Jena. This all-encompassing tech conglomerate is grappling with a tough economic climate, evident in its dipped revenue, orders, and earnings compared to last year.
"The Jenoptik narrative is shaped by a less-than-ideal market landscape at the beginning of '25," confirmed CEO Stefan Traeger. He's keeping his fingers crossed for an upturn later in the year, in spite of the noticeable reduction in order intake thus far, compared to the same period last year.
Dwindling income and profit within three months
Traeger remains hopeful that demand, most notably in the semiconductor equipment sector, will revive in the second half of the year. However, there's an increased risk surrounding the timeline and intensity of recovery, he added.
Jenoptik generates machinery for the chip industry. For the initial quarter, the publicly-traded company notched a revenue of €243.6 million, a 4.9% decrease compared to the same period in '24. Sales slumped in Germany, Europe, and even Asia.
The earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) stood at €16.9 million, a significant fall from €26.0 million in the same quarter last year. The net income for the quarter plunged to €9.2 million from €15.4 million the year before. The order intake in Q1 was €204.6 million, dipping below last year's €242.0 million. Jenoptik has expanded production capacities and, in May, unveiled a factory in Dresden for the production of semiconductor equipment.
Cautious outlook for '25
Jenoptik employs around 4,300 individuals, roughly a third based abroad. This Thuringia-based tech firm belongs to the exclusive group of listed technology companies in Eastern Germany and is included in the MDax index. The company's core business revolves around optical systems, lasers, and measurement technology for industrial applications, as well as traffic monitoring through lasers and tools.
Like many companies, Jenoptik flagged substantial uncertainties about future market development and risks abroad. "The '25 forecast for the business year is influenced by heightened market uncertainties," Jenoptik expressed. The company pulled in around €1.1 billion in revenue in '24.
