Director Jeff Fowler, behind Sonic 3, commemorates Shadow the Hedgehog's 20-year anniversary.

In a recent social media post, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler celebrated his two-decade connection with the iconic character, Shadow the Hedgehog. Fowler, who's known for his work in the VFX industry, first animated Shadow in the 2005 standalone video game, Shadow the Hedgehog.

Since fans' adoration for the controversial character, known as a bizarre military experiment-turned-antihero, rivals basic necessities like food, air, water, and shelter, you might have stumbled upon the viral clip of the thunderous applause Shadow received at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

For Fowler, who's also directed the previous two Sonic films, integrating Shadow into his live-action movie franchise must've felt like returning home or walking over his own grave. Prior to his work on Shadow the Hedgehog, Fowler was nominated for an Academy Award for his 2004 short film, Gopher Broke. Following this, he worked on Spike Jonze's film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are but never had the chance to direct a feature until Sonic the Hedgehog in 2020.

Whether Fowler's future will continue to revolve around the world of Sonic is to be seen, especially since he's been linked to a live-action/CGI hybrid remake of The Pink Panther.

According to Deadline, Sonic the Hedgehog 3's plot revolves around Sonic reuniting with friends Knuckles (Idris Eba) and Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) to combat a powerful adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they've faced before. Given their lack of ability to match Shadow, Team Sonic must seek an unconventional alliance to save the planet.

Apart from Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, the cast includes James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Krysten Ritter, Cristo Fernández, Jorma Taccone, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, and Sofia Pernas.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is slated for release in December 2024.
