Kazakhstan President Meets with WIPO Director-General to Discuss IP and Innovation Strategies
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a meeting with Daren Tang, the Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), as reported by Akorda's press service. The discussion revolved around joint initiatives aimed at bolstering Kazakhstan's intellectual property (IP) sector and fostering a sustainable, knowledge-driven economy.
Key initiatives on the table include the development of a National Innovation Strategy with an IP component. This comprehensive project aims to incentivize scientific research, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and create a conducive environment for innovation-driven businesses. Additionally, the collaboration between Kazakhstan and WIPO involves the establishment of Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs), which will offer local innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs access to global patent databases, technical information, and IP-related services, thereby facilitating the commercialization of research and fostering technological advancement.
The improvements in Kazakhstan's Global Innovation Index standing, seen in 2024, serve as a testament to the positive results of these initiatives.
During the meeting, President Tokayev stressed that the partnership with WIPO is essential for building a robust, forward-thinking IP system, crucial for Kazakhstan's long-term economic diversification and the formation of a sustainable knowledge-based economy. The strategic alliance was highlighted during the Astana International Forum 2025, which aimed to bring together global minds and shape the future of international cooperation and innovation.
Apart from this meeting, President Tokayev recently received the Vice President of Google for Central and Eastern Europe, and two street sections in Astana are due to be temporarily closed due to the summit.
