Don't Ignore Wheel Bearings: Safety Risks and Costs
Car owners should be aware of the importance of wheel bearings, which can wear out over time due to rotation and impacts. Neglecting them can lead to safety risks, as driving with a damaged wheel bearing is not recommended.
Wheel bearings, located on the hub, support the drive shaft and axle. They allow wheels to rotate with minimal friction, serving a crucial role in a car's operation. These components consist of an outer ring, inner ring, rolling bodies, cage, and lubricant. There are two types used in passenger cars: tapered roller and ball bearings.
Damaged wheel bearings can cause a barely noticeable noise when driving, which increases over time. If you notice such a noise, it's essential to stop driving immediately due to safety risks. Replacing both sides of the axle is recommended when a defect is discovered on one side, as the other side may also be affected. A defect can also impact the operation of ABS and ESP systems.
Replacing a wheel bearing usually costs between 200 to 350 euros, including parts and labor (as of November 2023).
Regularly checking wheel bearings is crucial for car safety and maintenance. If you suspect a defect, do not hesitate to have them replaced promptly. Modern cars also use roof rack systems and tow hitch bike carriers, which should be compatible with a car in good working condition, including properly functioning wheel bearings.
