Porsche Set to Launch Wireless-Charging Equipped Electric Cayenne

Porsche is set to join the ranks of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers offering wireless charging technology, with the upcoming electric Porsche Cayenne set to feature the Porsche Wireless Charger (PWC) system.

The PWC system, which charges at up to 11kW, will be available on the new electric Cayenne, set to be unveiled later this year following rigorous testing. This move by Porsche marks a significant step towards making EV charging more convenient and accessible for everyday use.

The PWC system works by attaching a floor plate to a driveway or garage, with a charging plate fixed to the underside of the vehicle. The system is designed to operate within a temperature range of -40 to +50 C and is not affected by normal debris, ensuring reliable charging in various conditions.

Porsche's commitment to wireless charging is not a new development. The company has already showcased the capabilities of the PWC system with the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo, an electric SUV revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. The Cross Turismo, expected to go into production, demonstrated impressive charging capabilities in a video.

Porsche is not alone in its pursuit of wireless charging technology. Jaguar and Volvo are also trialling wireless inductive charging with their respective models, the i-Pace and XC40. However, Hyundai's Genesis brand has abandoned the idea due to concerns over inefficiency and slow charging speeds.

Dr. Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche, emphasised the importance of ease of use, suitability for everyday use, and charging infrastructure in the acceptance of electric mobility. The introduction of the PWC system on the electric Cayenne is a testament to Porsche's commitment to addressing these concerns.

The electric Cayenne is expected to join Porsche's growing EV lineup, following the Taycan and Macan Electric. Additionally, Porsche is developing a new 'K1' range-topping electric SUV, indicating a continued focus on electric mobility.

The electric Porsche Cayenne could offer up to 1000bhp, making it a formidable addition to the EV market. With its wireless charging capabilities, Porsche is set to redefine the EV charging experience for its customers.

Stay tuned for more updates on the electric Porsche Cayenne and its groundbreaking PWC system.
