Elon Musk Claims Tesla's AI Superior to Waymo's in Self-Driving

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has made a bold claim about his company's AI capabilities. Meanwhile, leadership changes at Waymo, Google's self-driving car company, have been announced.

Musk stated that Tesla's AI hardware and software are superior to Waymo's for full self-driving systems. This comes after John Krafcik, former CEO of Waymo, had expressed doubts about Tesla's approach to autonomous vehicles.

Waymo, initially a project within Google, has since become a separate company under Alphabet. This change has allowed Waymo to offer equity to employees and seek external investors. Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin played a significant role in launching Google Brain and acquiring DeepMind, which have contributed to Waymo's AI advancements.

Following Krafcik's departure in April 2021, Waymo appointed two co-CEOs: Tekedra Mawakana, previously responsible for external affairs, and Dmitri Dolgov, a co-founder and long-time technical lead. As of October 2025, there have been no public announcements of a new single CEO, and the company continues to be led by Mawakana and Dolgov together.

Elon Musk's claim about Tesla's AI superiority in full self-driving systems is a significant statement in the industry. Meanwhile, Waymo's leadership change to a co-CEO model has proven successful so far, with no plans for a single CEO as of October 2025.
