Emerging Powerhouse: Ukraine's Rise in Global Defense Technology
Ukraine's Defence Tech Startup Competition Breaks Records with $12.5mn Investment Fund
In a testament to the growing prowess of Ukraine's defence technology sector, the 2025 Startup Competition has announced a record-breaking investment fund of $12.5 million. This significant increase from the typical $600,000 investment sought by competing teams reflects the global interest in Ukrainian defence innovations.
The competition, which attracts a diverse range of investors from local funds to international VCs, received a total of 202 applications, with 52 in the defence tech category. One of the standout entrants was Hard Cat Drones, a startup showcased at IT Arena 2024 in Lviv, Ukraine's largest tech event.
Hard Cat Drones, which develops unmanned systems for river and maritime operations, received a strategic investment from Double Tap Investments during the competition. The company's drones, which include kamikaze and reconnaissance models, were tested by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, providing a testament to their effectiveness under challenging conditions.
The Ukrainian defence tech sector has seen a remarkable transformation since the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Over 30 countries have expressed interest in Ukrainian defence innovations, signalling strong export potential for homegrown technologies. The sector's profit margin is 25%, the highest globally, compared with 17% in NATO countries and 15% in the EU.
The state defence technology cluster Brave1 has played a crucial role in this growth. Since its launch in March 2023, Brave1 has registered over 4,600 innovations from more than 2,100 developers. The cluster has also issued more than 600 grants totalling over $52.4 million, acting as the largest 'angel investor' for Ukrainian defence innovations.
The drone industry in Ukraine has also seen significant growth. There are over 500 active drone manufacturers and more than 1,000 drone models in the country, with 80% of the FPV drone segment controlled by four companies. Investments in the drone industry in 2024 exceeded $60 million, with seed rounds typically ranging from $1 million to $3 million.
The surge in drone production is expected to continue, with drone production expected to surge from 5,000 units in 2022 to 4,000,000 by the end of 2024. This growth is a testament to the resilience and innovation of Ukraine's defence tech sector, which continues to adapt and grow in the face of adversity.
The tech sector in Ukraine has been reshaped due to the full-scale war, with a focus on innovative military technologies and advanced defence solutions. The Startup Competition, IT Arena, and Brave1 are all playing their part in supporting this growth and helping Ukrainian defence tech startups to scale globally.
