Digital Electricity Meters Gain Popularity in the Southwest - EnBW Installs 100,000 Smart Meters in 2023 as Mandatory Rollout Begins
EnBW has already installed over 200,000 smart meters, with new requirements for these devices coming into effect in 2023. These meters help reduce electricity costs and stabilize networks, and their installation is mandatory for high-consumption consumers.
Smart meters automatically send consumption data to providers and make it visible to users. They are set to be used comprehensively in households and companies by 2032, with EnBW planning to install around 100,000 new intelligent electricity meters in its region this year.
Consumers can request smart meter installation, and from 2025, meter operators must carry it out within four months. These meters also enable variable electricity tariffs, aligning usage with price fluctuations. The nationwide rollout, announced by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, is managed by the Smart Meter Gateway Administration, overseen by the Federal Network Agency.
EnBW's smart meter installations are set to increase significantly in 2023, with mandatory installations for high-consumption consumers and the potential for variable tariffs. By 2032, smart meters are expected to be used comprehensively across Germany, helping consumers manage their energy usage more effectively.
