Enhancing Agriculture for Long-Term Development in Tây Ninh Province

Tay Ninh Province Aims for High-Tech Agricultural Hub Status

In a bid to transform into a high-tech agricultural processing and export hub, Tay Ninh Province is embracing eco-friendly practices to create a low-emission and efficient farming system.

Hà Thanh Tùng, director of the agricultural extension centre, explained that the province's irrigation systems allow for effective water management, lowering emissions while maintaining productivity levels.

Adopting new cultivation models and techniques, local farmers are saving water and reducing methane emissions. An exemplary model is the "alternate wetting and drying" smart rice farming method combined with the "one must - five reductions" technique.

This smart farming approach includes alternating between flooding and drying rice fields, thereby improving rice plant growth while significantly reducing water, fertilizer, and pesticide use.

The "one must - five reductions" method requires using certified rice seeds and decreasing the usage of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, water, and post-harvest losses.

According to Nguyễn Văn Lành of the An Bình Agricultural Service Cooperative, switching to these innovative methods reduced his per-hectare farming costs from VNĐ15 million to VNĐ10 million, resulting in a profit boost of VNĐ5 million per hectare.

Water usage has decreased by nearly 40 per cent while productivity has increased by over 15 per cent, Lành noted. This was attributed to the cooperative's concreted irrigation canal network ensuring stable water supply.

Tay Ninh Province plans to expand this rice farming model to other cooperatives and popularize its use across all rice cultivation areas.

Nguyễn Đình Xuân, director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, explained the province's strategies which include completing irrigation infrastructure, fostering business partnerships, accelerating technology transfer, and organizing production along value chains.

Other crops like Japanese baby cucumbers are benefiting from the region's favorable conditions. Growers can maintain ideal humidity and limit pests using drip irrigation technology and modern net houses.

Some farms, like Ba Den Farm, have achieved European-standard organic grape cultivation partly due to the expansion of the irrigation system.

Future goals for Tay Ninh Province include building a green and modern agricultural production ecosystem, with 31 per cent of its cultivated land utilizing water-saving irrigation technology. This helps minimize costs, conserve water, and increase land use efficiency.

Additionally, the province plans to apply biotechnology, utilizing natural predators instead of chemicals, promoting organic agriculture, providing support to local farmers and agriculture businesses, and creating concentrated production areas linked to processing and exports.

Investment in irrigation and high-tech agriculture is long-term strategy to boost productivity, quality, and competitiveness, and the province aims to become a high-tech agricultural processing and export hub in the region.

  1. The government's support and investment in irrigation and high-tech agriculture are crucial for Tay Ninh Province's ambition to become a regional high-tech agricultural processing and export hub.
  2. To minimise costs, conserve water, and increase land use efficiency, 31% of Tay Ninh Province's cultivated land will use water-saving irrigation technology, as per the province's plans.
  3. By adopting biotechnology, promoting organic agriculture, providing support to local farmers and agriculture businesses, and creating concentrated production areas linked to processing and exports, Tay Ninh Province aims to create a green and modern agricultural production ecosystem.
  4. Apart from rice, other crops like Japanese baby cucumbers are thriving in Tay Ninh Province due to modern technologies such as drip irrigation and the use of modern net houses, which aid in maintaining ideal humidity and limiting pests.
