Layer-2 gas costs for Ethereum bridges are now covered by Linea, with some exceptions: USDC transfers, high-gas transactions, and layer-1 fees remain the user's responsibility.

Entices Ethereum Users with Offer of Complimentary Layer-2 Connection Services

Rewritten Article:

Linea, a zero-knowledge layer-2 network built on Ethereum by Consensys, has decided to cover layer-2 gas fees for users bridging assets from Ethereum to Linea, aiming to make onboarding smoother. In a recent Reddit post, it was stated that this offer excludes a few conditions, such as USDC transfers, high-gas transactions, and doesn't waive layer-1 fees.

Linea's zero-gas offer on layer-2 transactions via its native bridge can be seen as part of an ongoing effort to reduce friction for new users. Linea serves as a scaling solution for Ethereum apps, offering lower costs and faster transactions.

Coin transfers from Ethereum to Linea will benefit from waived gas fees, but users should keep in mind a couple of things: the offer only covers layer-1 to layer-2 transactions; it won’t apply to anything that uses more than 250,000 gas; and USDC transfers through Circle's CCTP are not included in the free offer, meaning users will still have to pay for Ethereum mainnet gas costs. To give an idea, this means the user will pay up to $20-$45 in Ethereum mainnet gas fees, depending on network congestion.

A Look Ahead:

Rumors are swirling about Linea's intention to launch its LINEA token, expected to bolster the development of its zkEVM mainnet and increase decentralization through token holder governance. Earlier plans proposed a Q1 2025 launch, but no specific date has been confirmed thus far. With Q1 now behind us, speculation has moved towards the second quarter of 2025 as a potential time for significant events such as the airdrop. However, there remains no official announcement regarding the exact timing of the Token Generation Event (TGE). The cryptocurrency market's instability and broader economic factors could be factors contributing to a delay in announcing a specific date. Sources indicate that the TGE is currently anticipated for Q2 2025.

  1. Linea's upcoming LINEA token, aimed at bolstering the development of its zkEVM mainnet and increasing decentralization through token holder governance, is expected to be launched in Q2 2025.
  2. Although Linea offers zero-gas fees for layer-2 transactions via its native bridge, it's important to note that this offer excludes USDC transfers, high-gas transactions, and doesn't waive layer-1 fees, potentially costing users up to $20-$45 in Ethereum mainnet gas fees.
  3. Rumors suggest that Linea might utilize its LINEA token to cover layer-2 gas fees for users bridging assets from Ethereum to Linea, which could make onboarding smoother and further reduce friction for new users.
  4. Metamask, a popular crypto wallet, could potentially be used with Linea via its native bridge, as users would require it to interact with Decentralized Exchanges (DEXs) on the Linea network, enabling them to trade their tokens, including the prospective LINEA token.
