Evaluation of Electric Model: Jeep Wagoneer S Exhibits Stolid Performance Yet Falling Short in Ride Quality
The Jeep brand, one of the few successes in the North American market for Stellantis, a multinational automotive conglomerate, has made a bold move with its first fully battery-powered vehicle, the Wagoneer S.
Launched in 2024, the Wagoneer S has been plagued by serious problems with its electronics, resulting in recalls. However, Jeep claims to have implemented fixes for these problems in the new 2025 model.
The Wagoneer S is a midsize, two-row battery-powered SUV with a 94 kWh battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive. It offers impressive performance, with the Launch edition accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in a Ferrari-rivalling 3.4 seconds. In comparison, the Limited trim can cover the same distance in 4.0 seconds.
The Launch edition of the Wagoneer S comes packed with luxury features. These include massaging front seats, cooling/heating in all four outboard positions, a sueded headliner, a power-adjustable steering column, and menacingly blacked-out 20-inch wheels and trim bits. The vehicle also boasts a 19-speaker, 1,200-watt stereo from McIntosh.
In addition to its performance and luxury features, the Wagoneer S offers various drive settings (Eco, Sport, Sand, Snow) that adjust inputs for accelerator, steering wheel, brakes, all-wheel-drive system, and traction control.
However, the Wagoneer S's price point is high for its category, making it a difficult proposition to recommend. The price as tested for the Limited trim is $67,790, and for the Launch trim, it is $73,195.
Jeep is attempting to capitalize on its relative strength in the electrified market with the Wagoneer S. The brand has seen growth in sales, with a portion of this expansion attributed to strong sales of its plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). The Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe have consistently occupied America's top sales positions for PHEVs over the past several years.
The Wagoneer S is meant to appeal to buyers shopping in the popular midsize, luxury sport utility market. With its blend of performance, luxury, and technology, the Wagoneer S aims to carve out a niche for itself in this competitive segment.
Despite its challenges, the Wagoneer S is a significant step forward for Jeep in the increasingly important electrified vehicle market. As the brand continues to refine its electric offerings, it could potentially become a major player in this sector.
