General Motors Welcomes Alfred F. Kelly Jr. to its Board of Directors

In a recent development, General Motors (GM) has announced the appointment of Alfred F. Kelly Jr. to its board of directors. The news was made public in a press release on September 5.

Alfred F. Kelly Jr., who previously served as the CEO of Visa Inc. from 2016 to 2023, brings a wealth of leadership experience to the automotive company. He navigated Visa through challenging times, including the coronavirus pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and stock market fluctuations.

Kelly's appointment comes as GM continues its "board refresh," electing eight new directors over the last five years. The company's governance committee prioritizes preserving the board's diversity and adding directors with experience in technology, industry, marketing, and cybersecurity.

Kelly's tenure at Visa saw him elected as the chairman of the board in 2019 and, more recently, he became executive chairman of Visa in 2023 before retiring from the board in January. His extensive experience in digital payments is a valuable asset for GM, as the company continues to navigate the rapidly changing digital landscape.

The new appointment increases the number of directors on GM's board to 13. The other directors have diverse backgrounds, with experience in fields such as manufacturing, information technology, digital commerce, defense, transportation, and cybersecurity.

Mary Barra, GM's chair and CEO, expressed her excitement about Kelly's appointment, stating that his financial, tech, and consumer insights are a great complement to GM's board.

In other news, Aneel Bhusri, who was previously a member of GM's board, has transitioned to the board of GM's autonomous vehicle unit, Cruise. This move was announced in the company's 2024 proxy statement.

Twelve of GM's directors are independent, and six are women, reflecting the company's commitment to diversity and inclusivity. The new directors will undoubtedly contribute to GM's ongoing efforts to adapt to the evolving technological landscape and position itself for future success.
