Beginning this Saturday, the Biberach Museum presents "Ideas Become Reality," a special exhibition highlighting the history and innovations of the Liebherr Group, a globally active family-owned company with roots in the Biberach district. According to Museum Director Frank Brunecker, the exhibition offers insights into Liebherr's approach to economic success and technological development.
Pioneering the Way in Construction Machinery
Originally a construction company, the Liebherr Group took off when Hans Liebherr, a war returnee, took over the business in 1945. Four years later, Liebherr constructed a mobile crane and was granted a patent for it. In the 1950s, new plants were established in Kirchdorf, Biberach, Bad Schussenried, and Ochsenhausen for milling machines, excavators, concrete mixers, and refrigeration systems.
Global Reach and Diversification
After initial expansion within Europe, Liebherr ventured into the USA and South America in 1970 and has since grown to encompass around 140 individual companies and approximately 40 production sites worldwide. The company headquarters were relocated to Switzerland in 1982. Following Hans Liebherr's death in 1993, his children took charge of the company, with six grandchildren of the founder now on the supervisory board of Liebherr International AG. Liebherr machines can be found in almost every sector of the global construction industry, demonstrating the brand's resilience in various economic conditions.
Economic Backbone of the Biberach Region
The Liebherr Group continues to be a significant employer in the district, with four locations in Kirchdorf, Ochsenhausen, Biberach, and Bad Schussenried contributing to employment opportunities in the region. The company's impact on the local economy is evident, as evidenced by the fact that a third of Liebherr's 54,000 employees worldwide are based between the Alb and the Allgäu.
Multimedia Experience at "Ideas Become Reality"
The exhibition delivers an immersive experience through impressive photographs, films, individual exhibit pieces, and models. Museum visitors can explore Liebherr's history, technology, and innovations while gaining insights into the company's decentralized structure and its role in driving economic success and technological innovation.
"Ideas Become Reality - Liebherr" will be on display at the Biberach Museum until Sunday, October 19, open daily except Mondays from 11 am to 6 pm. Admission is free on Saturdays.
