Exposed Images Reveal Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 with Notable Fold Flat Feature

Speculations suggest that Samsung's top-tier foldable device may include narrower borderlines, while the Flip 4 potentially boasts an expansive external display.

Exposed Images Reveal Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 with Notable Fold Flat Feature

Samsung Unpacked is right around the corner in July, which means it's time for the annual leak of renders online. The latest leaks of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 suggest they will retain a similar design to last year's models, but with the potential for the screens to finally fold flat.

The leaked images originate from MySmartPrice and indicate that Samsung's new foldables have been working on their fitness since 2022. The slimmer phones show a reduced bezel, while the Fold 5 retains the same triple-camera setup as the Fold 4 with its prominent lenses.

What's most intriguing about these renders is the new hinge, potentially the key to better foldability. Samsung hasn't responded to a request for comment.

MySmartPrice's renders of the Flip 4 don't provide much insight into the hinge, but they do show Samsung adding a significant external screen to its clamshell device while still accommodating two exterior camera sensors.

Back in March, The Elec reported that the Fold 5 would reduce thickness to within 14mm from the Fold 4's 15.8mm. The article noted, based on supply chain insiders, that Samsung was conducting rigorous hinge stress tests to minimize breakage complaints. This "waterdrop" hinge allows the phone to flex inward, reducing crease visibility and closing the gap between the two halves of the screen.

Rumors suggest the Fold 5 will feature a 7.6-inch AMOLED display inside and a 6.2-inch display on the cover. The next-gen Flip is rumored to have a 6.7-inch display inside and a 3.4-inch outer screen. Both devices are expected to use the high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, aligning them with other top-tier, pricey devices.

The Flip might include a smaller, 3700mAh battery, while the Fold 5 is anticipated to come with a 4400mAh battery with 45W fast charging. With specs like these, it's uncertain whether the Fold 5's price will stray far from the Fold 4's $1800.

All the buzz around hinges is because Google's Pixel Fold debuted in May, with the company emphasizing its hinge technology as exceptionally durable compared to competing foldables. Gizmodo's test of Google's foldable revealed larger bezels than Samsung's leaked renders, as well as hinges on both ends of the phone instead of at the spine. The Fold 5's designs appear to lean more toward Samsung's classic designs.

No foldable manufacturer has yet cracked the code on a durable foldable hinge. Motorola's upcoming Razr+ features an exposed hinge on the phone's interior, while OnePlus's N2 Flip manages to close the gap better than Samsung's comparable offering.

MySmartPrice predicts the Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 could be unveiled during Samsung Unpacked in South Korea next month and launched in August, with a Korean release coming first.

The buzz in the tech industry indicates that Samsung is aiming to improve its foldable devices' foldability in the future, with the potential for the new hinge to minimize crease visibility and close the gap between the Fold 5's screens. This advancement in technology could position Samsung's upcoming devices as leaders in the durable foldable hinge market, challenging competitors like Google and Motorola.
