Fiat Introduces Hybrid Version of 500 Model

The Italian automaker Fiat is set to introduce a new hybrid version of its iconic 500 model, scheduled for production to start in November 2025. The Fiat 500 Hybrid will be built on the STLA City platform, the same as its electric counterpart, the 500e.

The new hybrid model aims to offer an affordable, fuel-efficient alternative to Fiat's fully electric offering. Expected pricing is likely around €20,000, competitive with its EV rivals but possibly slightly higher due to hybrid technology costs.

The hybrid powertrain includes a 1.0L FireFly 3-cyl. engine, manufactured in Termoli, Italy, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The Fiat 500 Hybrid will be available in both Hatchback and Cabrio body styles.

Advanced connectivity features such as Uconnect 5 with a 10.25” touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and enhanced urban-driving safety and driver assistance systems will be standard.

Stellantis, Fiat's parent company, plans to produce over 100,000 units of the Fiat 500 Hybrid annually to meet anticipated demand. However, there are no confirmed plans to introduce the Fiat 500 Hybrid to the North American market as Stellantis reviews its brand distribution strategy this year.

Production of the Fiat 500 Hybrid will take place at the Mirafiori Assembly Plant in Turin, Italy. The hybrid model's arrival comes after a challenging period for Fiat in the U.S., with sales plummeting from 15,500 units in 2018 to just 1,528 units by 2024.

Stellantis also plans to offer 36 hybrid models across its brands by 2026, demonstrating its commitment to a diverse electric and hybrid portfolio. The Fiat 500 Hybrid's return to the European market follows its discontinuation due to new EU cybersecurity regulations.

The Fiat 500 Hybrid shares design elements and technological features with its fully electric sibling, ensuring a consistent and modern aesthetic across Fiat's electrified lineup.

In 2024, Fiat lost 20 franchises, reflecting the challenges faced by dealers in maintaining profitability amid dwindling demand. The introduction of the Fiat 500 Hybrid could help revive interest with affordable pricing, making it more accessible to a wider audience.
