Ford & Sunrun Launch First U.S. Vehicle-to-Grid Program Using F-150 Lightning Trucks
Ford and Sunrun have launched the first nationwide vehicle-to-grid (V2G) program in the U.S., using Ford F-150 Lightning electric trucks. The pilot project, involving three customers, allows the trucks' batteries to power homes and the grid during peak demand times.
Sunrun, a leading home energy company, is operating the program in partnership with Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE). It uses Sunrun's Home Integration System to enable bidirectional charging, harnessing the F-150 Lightning's battery capacity of up to 131 kWh.
Participants earn up to $1,000 for the dispatching season, from July to September. Sunrun already has over 150,000 home batteries installed in the U.S., demonstrating its commitment to flexible grid operation via virtual power plants. This V2G market has significant potential, with global technical capacity projections ranging from 32 TWh to 62 TWh by 2050, even with low participation rates.
The Ford-Sunrun V2G program marks a significant step towards integrating electric vehicles into the power grid. It offers a new revenue stream for electric truck owners and enhances grid resilience. As the program expands, it could pave the way for wider adoption of V2G technology in the U.S. and beyond.
