Fortnite makes alterations to AI-controlled Darth Vader character following the use of inappropriate language.

In a shocking turn of events, the recently introduced generative AI-powered Darth Vader in Fortnite by Epic Games found itself spouting hate speech and explicit language due to a content moderation oversight. This problematic development was based on the licensed likeness of the late James Earl Jones, who brought the iconic villain to life with his powerful voice.

Friday saw the introduction of Darth Vader in Fortnite as part of the Star Wars/Fortnite crossover event, "Fortnite: Galactic Battle." The AI-driven character, developed by New York-based voice AI company ElevenLabs, could engage with players in real-time. However, it didn't take long for players to exploit this technology, encouraging Darth Vader to say racist and homophobic slurs, as well as profanity.

Social media platforms were inundated with clips showcasing the AI character's derogatory responses within hours of its rollout. Epic Games promptly responded with a hotfix, stating that such occurrences should no longer happen.

"We pushed a hotfix immediately, and this shouldn't happen again," the company announced.

Upon further scrutiny, Epic Games acknowledged a content moderation oversight prior to the addition of Darth Vader to Fortnite. In a statement shared with Decrypt, a company spokesperson explained, "While we added several specific rules and instructions as part of our guardrails to prevent Darth Vader from swearing or repeating swear words, in this instance, our filters did not catch a specific variation of an expletive."

The AI-generated Darth Vader was built using archived recordings of James Earl Jones' voice. Jones, who passed away in 2024, had previously licensed his vocal likeness to Lucasfilm, enabling the character's portrayal to continue in new media even after his passing.

Since 2023, Epic Games has embraced generative AI creations via its Epic Games Store platform, even as competitors have fought to block the emerging technology. This is not the first time AI-generated content has been a concern in Fortnite. In January 2024, Epic Games took swift action to purge racist AI-generated images for user-created islands following public outrage.

Despite the unanticipated incident, Epic Games expressed gratitude to the late Mr. Jones and his estate, stating, "We're honored to feature the voice of the late Mr. Jones, and we thank his estate for the opportunity to make this happen for players."

For parents or guardians concerned about their children's exposure to such content, Epic Games also introduced controls to restrict access to AI features. However, this episode serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that arise when integrating AI into interactive environments, especially when ensuring safeguards against misuse.
