Fürth's Tourism Grows, but Industry Faces Staffing and Pay Challenges

Fürth's tourism has seen a steady rise, with 149,800 overnight stays recorded in the first half of 2025, marking a 0.5 percent increase from the same period last year. This growth, however, lags behind the statewide increase of 0.8 percent. The hospitality industry in Fürth faces challenges, including criticism of working conditions and staff shortages.

The increase in overnight stays in Fürth continues the positive trend from the record year of 2024. However, the union Nahrung-Genuss-Gaststätten (NGG) has criticized the working conditions in the industry. An unidentified individual also raised concerns about these conditions earlier this year.

The pandemic has led to many full-time workers leaving the hospitality sector in Fürth, contributing to staff shortages. This has resulted in businesses reducing their opening hours and experiencing lower turnover. The NGG has identified payment as the central issue, with many businesses paying only the legal minimum wage of 12.82 euros per hour, despite the collective bargaining entry wage being 17.85 euros per hour. The NGG demands that businesses should focus more on regular staff and training to maintain quality in kitchen and service.

Despite the increase in overnight stays, the hospitality industry in Fürth faces significant challenges. Criticism of working conditions and staff shortages persist, with many businesses struggling to maintain regular opening hours and turnover. The union NGG calls for improved pay and focus on regular staff and training to address these issues.
