Future possibilities: Commission Lower Saxony 2030 initiates its operations

The Lower Saxony 2030 Commission, a group of twelve esteemed scientists and experts, commenced its work in Berlin on Monday. Professor Dietmar Harhoff, Ph.D., Director of the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich, will chair the commission.

The commission, initiated by Minister President Stephan Weil, has been formed to address challenges posed by digitization, difficult demographic developments, and climate change. Its work will focus on fields such as digitization, robotics, and artificial intelligence, health and care, nutrition and climate change, mobility, demographic questions, and immigration.

The commission's work complements the state's innovation concept and transfer strategy, aiming to bring together various aspects such as work and climate protection, coordinating mobility and energy transition, and keeping social questions in mind. The commission's work will also include the digital transformation as one of its main challenges.

The commission will be supported by a business unit located in the State Chancellery and several decentralized events are planned for the commission's professional exchange with Lower Saxony actors. The commission's work will be published, and its final report is expected in late autumn 2020.

Stephan Weil, Minister President, stated that the commission is necessary to lay a broad foundation for future politics in Lower Saxony. He is eagerly anticipating the results of the Zukunftskommission Niedersachsen 2030, which he believes will provide concrete recommendations for the state.

The basic concept of Niedersachsen 2030 is based on an initiative by Gunter Dunkel (Stiftung Niedersachsen) and Dr. Wilhelm Krull (Volkswagen Foundation). Dr. Krull, Secretary General of the Volkswagen Foundation, is accompanying the commission's work externally as a co-initiator.

The work of the Zukunftskommission Niedersachsen 2030 begins on July 1, 2019, and ends on December 31, 2020. The commission's work will culminate in the presentation of its recommendations and proposals to the state punctually for the state anniversary in two years. The results of the commission will be presented throughout Lower Saxony as part of the 75th state anniversary in 2021.

Several events are planned for the commission's professional exchange with Lower Saxony actors, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the state's needs and challenges. Stephan Weil emphasized that the commission is crucial for laying a solid foundation for future politics in Lower Saxony, addressing the issues of digitization, demographic shifts, and climate change head-on.
