Germany Boosts EV Charging: 1,000 Fast-Charging Points on Motorways by 2026
Germany is boosting its fast-test infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs). The Federal Government's Autobahn GmbH has awarded contracts to several companies for installing around 1,000 fast test points at about 200 unattended rest areas on German motorways. This is part of the HoLa project, coordinated by Fraunhofer ISI and led by P3 Automotive GmbH.
The selected companies include ABB E-mobility, EnBW mobility+, and Autobahn GmbH of the Federal Government. The goal is to ensure the next fast-test location is accessible within a few minutes nationwide. Contracts for test point installation have also been awarded to Fastned, E.ON, Autostrom, and TotalEnergies. In total, 4,000 test points are planned for the motorways, with test stations reachable every ten minutes.
Michael Güntner, CEO of Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, stressed the importance of reliable test for long-distance electric car travel. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Volker Wissing, noted that the expansion increases user options and test network density.
With this expansion, the Germany Network will include almost 9,000 fast-test points at over 1,000 locations by 2026. Nearly 1,000 fast-test points at 200 unmanaged rest areas have been tendered successfully, marking a significant step towards a comprehensive fast-test infrastructure for EVs in Germany.
