Giant Luxury Yacht from Lürssen Company Capable of Navigating 1,000 Nautical Miles on Electric Power Solely
The German yard Lürssen has launched a new custom megayacht named Cosmos, a 375-foot vessel that stands out for its green technology and innovative design. Commissioned by a "visionary owner" who wanted a unique vessel for world exploration, Cosmos is one of the largest yachts to hit the water this year [1].
Powered by two 500 kW methanol fuel cells, a first for Lürssen, Cosmos can cruise the seas emissions-free and reach speeds of up to seven knots, with a range of up to 1,000 nautical miles on electricity alone [2]. This cutting-edge system converts methanol into hydrogen and then electricity, significantly reducing the yacht's environmental footprint compared to traditional diesel engines [3].
Industrial designer Marc Newson, who crafted both the interior and exterior aesthetics, has created a futuristic, explorer-style profile with a forward-shifted superstructure, maximizing an expansive aft deck featuring a pool, Jacuzzi, and dry dock for the largest tender [1]. A signature architectural highlight is the large glass dome on the uppermost deck, which serves as a private owner’s study with 360-degree panoramic views made possible by a custom-developed engineered glass bending process to create thick, imperfection-free curved panels [2].
The aft of the main deck features an open balcony with a glass balustrade, while the adjoining sky terrace is a private alfresco space for the owner [1]. The yacht spans six decks and offers a generous amount of living space, with a volume of 6,300 GT and a beam of 59 feet [4].
Other notable design and functional features include a two-level glass atrium enhancing natural light and spatial experience inside, glass observation deck beneath the helipad, and full-beam observation lounges with floor-to-ceiling glass walls [2][3]. The reinforced hull is rated Ice Class 1D, enabling safe navigation in light ice conditions for extended exploration [5]. Accommodation for 18 guests and a crew of over 36 balances luxury with operational capacity [1].
Marc Newson states that working with the client has enabled rare opportunities to push the boundaries, with every detail and silhouette being their design [6]. In summary, Cosmos pioneers sustainable superyacht innovation through its methanol fuel-cell hybrid system and blends it with distinctively bold, highly engineered design elements like the glass dome and explorer hull to create a luxurious, eco-conscious vessel capable of worldwide, extended, and environmentally responsible cruising [1][2][4][5].
