GitHub Introduces 'Mission Control Center' for Developers, Enabling Delegation of Tasks to Artificial Intelligence Coding Assistants

In a significant move to streamline AI agent management, GitHub has launched the Agents panel. This new feature, announced in August 2025, is designed to help developers work more efficiently with AI agents.

Previously, developers using GitHub's Copilot coding agent could delegate tasks by assigning issues, using Visual Studio Code, or by triggering tasks from compatible apps integrating with GitHub via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). However, the new Agents panel offers a more accessible and user-friendly approach.

The Agents panel is a popup overlay that appears as a button in the right of the navigation bar. By clicking this "agents" button, developers can trigger tasks for the Copilot agent, track existing tasks, and review pull requests, all without leaving their current work setting.

The Agents panel allows developers to start a new Copilot task with a simple prompt. To initiate a task, developers describe their goal in natural language, select the relevant repository, and Copilot will create a plan, draft changes, run tests, and prepare a pull request. The Copilot coding agent, designed to handle low-to-medium complexity tasks, works in the background and tags the user for review when a task is complete.

The positive response from developers to the Copilot coding agent has encouraged GitHub to further simplify its use. Tim Rogers, staff product manager, stated in a blog post that AI agents are becoming a bigger part of developers' day-to-day workflows. The new Agents panel is a response to this growing trend, aiming to help developers better manage their AI agents.

The new Agents panel is part of GitHub's "mission control" tool, which is designed to help developers manage AI agents more effectively. The specific persons involved in the development of the 'Mission Control' or 'Agents Panel' tool are not named in the available sources.

The Agents panel is currently available in a public preview for all paid Copilot subscribers on GitHub. With this new feature, developers can delegate coding tasks and track progress more easily, making AI agent management more seamless across the GitHub platform.
