Google Introduces a Sharing Feature for Personalized "Gems"

Google has taken a significant step forward in the development of its AI technology, with the introduction of a sharing feature for its personalized AI assistants, known as Gemini Gems. Although the exact year of the feature's introduction is not explicitly stated, it is clear that Google has been actively developing and integrating Gemini AI into various products since at least 2024.

The sharing feature is available for users subscribed to Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business, and Gemini Enterprise plans. This new addition makes Gemini Gems more accessible to users who may not have the time or inclination to build their own AI assistants. The sharing feature is modelled after the familiar method of sharing files in Google Drive, making it easy for users to engage with Gems that others have already created.

In March 2025, Google expanded the availability of Gems to all users. This opens up a world of possibilities, as users can now share their custom-designed Gems with others. For example, a student could design a 'study partner' Gem complete with quizzes and flashcards and pass it along to classmates. Each Gem showcases the versatility of the system, demonstrating how it can be shaped for personal or professional use.

At launch, Google provided several ready-made Gems such as a learning coach, a brainstorming assistant, a career guide, a writing editor, and a coding partner. Users can share their custom Gems with others through the Gem manager in the web app. One shared Gem can now serve an entire team or group, such as co-workers, families, or friends.

Users also have the ability to decide who can view or use their Gems, and grant editing rights as needed. This feature is beneficial in various settings, including the workplace, family meal planning, and travel planning with friends. The sharing feature will be available in more than 150 countries.

To make the tool more flexible, Google has added support for file uploads. This means that users can now import documents, images, and other files into their Gems, making them even more powerful and versatile. Sharing a Gem also removes the issue of multiple users creating duplicate Gems for the same purpose.

Google's Gemini Gems are personalized AI assistants designed for specific tasks. They are designed to make life easier and more efficient for users, and the sharing feature is a significant step towards achieving this goal. By making it easier for users to share and collaborate on Gems, Google is helping to create a community of users who can benefit from each other's creations and expertise.
